Suddenly guards appear and the Duke is outnumbered and in danger of being discovered, but D'Artagnan assists and Planchet brings the other musketeers as well, and they defeat the guards while the Duke makes his escape. Athos captures de Winter; D'Artagnan duels Rochefort and apparently kills him with a lunge through the chest though it is revealed in the sequel The Return of the Musketeers that he actually survived the wound. Buckingham has his servant Felton lock her away in the , but she seduces Felton and convinces him that Buckingham is his enemy. As D'Artagnan arrives in Paris he comes upon Rochefort Christopher Lee , a tall man with a patch over one eye, who makes an offhanded remark to some companions about the newcomer's horse.
Roy Kinnear almost steals The Three Musketeers as the hapless, maltreated sidekick Planchet, the workhorse of the many musketeers, often getting the last laugh in the comedy scenes. It is the third Musketeers film directed by , following 1973's and 1974's. The remaining two guards surrender, but not before Porthos finds that his hat has been cleaved in two and lifts twenty pistoles from a downed guard to pay the damages and twenty more to teach them manners. At the familiar location of one of his companions' duels, D'Artagnan jumps upon a fresh horse, cutting a rope attached to the pommel, not knowing that two of his fellow musketeers are using the horse to pull Athos out of a well he has fallen into. D'Artagnan also begins an affair with his landlord's wife, Constance Bonacieux, who is dressmaker to the Queen,. I never have and I won't now. He locates the purse of 100 pistoles to use for the trip, but the pair are forced to quickly hide in a wardrobe when Bonacieux arrives with Rochefort and his men; after no trace of the pair is found, they leave.
As the first of these duels is about to begin, Jussac arrives with five additional swordsmen of Cardinal Richelieu's guards. Soon after, La Rochelle surrenders. Meanwhile, the Queen has confided her troubles in Constance, who asks d'Artagnan to ride to England and get back the diamonds. They attempt a rescue by knocking out the headsman, but Justine takes his place and executes Charles. A group of women have arrived, petty criminals and prostitutes, who have been freed from jail by horny lonely frontiersmen, on condition that they marry their benefactors.
Richard Chamberlain is distinctive as an effete ladies' man. Please note figures are rentals accruing to distributors and not total gross. When Constance looks out a balcony window, she upsets a pot of flowers and D'Artagnan immediately knows from the accident where to go; he creates a distraction with musicians and prematurely set-off fireworks, but is delayed in getting the studs to Constance when the guards appear. The Cardinal orders de Winter to threaten the Duke of Buckingham with exposure of his affair with the Queen, to discourage him from sending a relief force to aid the rebels; she is to kill the Duke if he does not comply.
