Like her previous films, Tanuja Chandra chose the female character to be the protagonist. She tells Yogi that Jaya is a keeper. I might not watch this movie over and over again, but I can watch this movie any time and I wouldn't be bored. The movie received praise for the story and the performances by the lead. Which girl in her right mind will agree to travel to 3 different cities with a relative stranger? As they start getting to know each other, Jaya realizes that she and Yogi are polar opposites and do not see eye to eye on most topics. Her ulterior motives are revealed a bit later and that's when things get a but dramatic as expected.
Conversations between characters are not too long but eventful. Two distinct and seemingly incompatible individuals learn to appreciate and love the quirks of the other. But Jaya feels connected to him. To start, as a long-time Indian cinemaphile, I'll watch anything with Irrfan Khan in it, because I believe he's simply one of the most authentic and genuine, pure actors, in probably any Wood today: Bolly or Holly. Never for a second do you feel disinterested for the leading people of the story. Her laptop bag is left with Yogi who boards another train by mistake. What saves this movie from becoming another cliché Rom-Com is the well nuanced characters of Jaya and Yogi, the effortless ease with which the actors portray them and the realistic direction.
Though I wasn't as impressed with Qarib Qarib Singlle as I was with Hindi Medium, this movie still managed to make me laugh and leave the theatre smiling. This is second film this year after Hindi Medium where the actor does a fine job in comic scenes. For the most part, she does it successfully. Initially Jaya decides to abort her trip due to Yogi's whimsical ways. Star of the show is the chemistry that the leads share, that sense of adorability n innocence they portray, not to take away any credit from their acting. His style of humor is one of a kind and doesn't leave any room for boredom.
During their conversation he tells her about his past 3 girlfriends who still yearn for him. Both Yogi and Jaya come with baggage from their respective pasts, but while the former is open to new relationships, Jaya is not so sure. This film is Parvathy's debut and it earned her praises for her performance. This allows her to take some otherwise questionable decisions when she meets the whirlwind that is Yogi. As Parvathy makes her Bollywood debut with this film, Qarib Qarib Singlle has also attracted audiences from the South as well. She is such a breath of fresh air, such a break from the dressed up dolls of Bollywood.
The accomplished South Indian actress plays a confident girl-next-door who appears to have a stable job and caring friends. Yogi walks Anjali back to her home, where a star gazing party is underway. She hugs and gives him a peck. Kamna Chandra's story is extremely relatable as it talks about loneliness, need for relationship, dating apps etc. After the initial struggle of cheesy, perverted responses, she finally receives a decent response from the male protagonist, Yogi.
And of course discovering a part of their own feelings through some really hilarious dialogue and experiences. Odd couples sometimes makes it an even watch. So here's my mouth saying the words that this is a pleasant and feel good movie that finds its way into your heart. She has handled the plot with maturity and sensitivity. The movie hit the screens on Friday, November 10, and within a day or two, it is now available online.
Rest others were impressive too. Also a technique of breaking the fourth wall is used in this film maybe a first for a hindi film , which was great. Give it a shot- and perhaps you'll figure out why 'Singlle' is spelled with 2 l's. My mother really enjoyed this film and urged me to watch it. You don't need dapper lads with washboard abs and pretty faces to sell a romcom, a spirited 40-year-old can do the same with élan too. The film is shot in various locations and it looks very much awesome on screen.
Its quite sad that these films don't get the recognition they deserve. Irrfan Khan is an actor whose films are on an auto-watch list for me. The Rishikesh episode is sweet and light. Together Irrfan and Parvathy may look like an odd-couple but their effortless chemistry and the off-kilter romance works magic in this film. He meets her eventually at the airport and they commence their journey.
The latter are introduced and exit the story before their presence makes much of an overall impact. In the morning she is belting out Yogi's song from the previous evening, in her room. The film itself is a refreshing example of what storytelling, at its very best, can be: a truthful reflection of what everyday life is like, the different right and wrong ways in which everyday people deal with it, and an offering of hope that transcending adversity while holding on to our virtue is rewarded by a successful life of whatever scale or magnitude. Back at the hotel he packs his bags and goes to Jaya's room when he finds her Laptop. The lensman has captured the locales of Rishikesh, Rajasthan and Gangtok beautifully. Qarib Qarib Singlle tells the story of a divorcée Jaya Malayalam film actress Parvathy Menon who befriends the full-of-life, Yogi Irrfan Khan , and agrees to accompany him on a road trip.
